Whitman County has an
estimated 2005 population of
42,400
whose largest city, Pullman, comprises over half the
population. Whitman County is bordered by Idaho to the east,
Spokane and Lincoln counties to the north, Adams and
Franklin counties to the west, and Walla Walla, Columbia,
Garfield, and Asotin counties to the south. Pullman is home
to
Washington State University,
and nearby Moscow is home of the
University of Idaho.
Unlike the
Washington coast, Whitman County tends to be fairly
dry and historically has been a pea and lentil farming area.
As home to a major university, the population drops
dramatically during the summer months.
Whitman
County's weather has all four seasons. Residents can expect
warm arid summers, crisp falls, snowy winters and a welcome
spring.
